English as an Additional Language

The term "EAL" refers to learners for whom English is an Additional Language.

At St. Anne’s Catholic Primary School, we are committed to meeting the needs of all children learning English as an Additional Language. We value and welcome the cultural, linguistic, and educational experiences that EAL pupils bring to our school community. Our goal is to recognize the skills these pupils have in their own languages and understand that becoming fluent in a new language takes time.

We encourage pupils to use their first language to explore concepts and use various strategies to help them access the curriculum. Our aim is to support EAL pupils in becoming confident and fluent in speaking, understanding, reading, and writing in English so they can reach their full academic potential.

If you would like more information on how to support your child at home, please contact the school office and ask to speak with Mrs. Burnitt, our SENCO.
