Relationships, Sex and Health Education (RSHE) and PSHE – Intent, Implementation and Impact

At St Anne’s Catholic Primary School, we deliver Relationships, Sex and Health Education (RSHE) and PSHE through the Life to the Full Plus programme by Ten Ten, rooted firmly in the teachings of the Catholic Church and inspired by the Gospel.

We believe that every child is created in the image and likeness of God and is therefore deserving of dignity, respect and love. Through our RSHE and PSHE curriculum, we seek to nurture the whole child—spiritually, morally, socially, emotionally and physically—so that they may flourish and live life to the full.

Our curriculum is underpinned by Catholic Social Teaching and supports children to develop an understanding of themselves, their relationships and their place within God’s world.

At St Anne’s, we aim to:

• Enable children to understand that they are uniquely created and unconditionally loved by God.
• Promote positive relationships rooted in love, respect, dignity and compassion.
• Support children in developing the knowledge, skills and confidence to make informed and responsible choices.
• Encourage children to recognise and celebrate the diversity of the world around them.
• Develop children’s emotional literacy, resilience and wellbeing.
• Promote healthy lifestyles and an understanding of physical and mental health.
• Equip children with the skills to keep themselves safe, both online and offline.
• Ensure all pupils, including those with SEND, can access and engage successfully with the curriculum.

Catholic Ethos and Catholic Social Teaching

Our RSHE and PSHE curriculum reflects the principles of Catholic Social Teaching by promoting:

• Human Dignity – recognising that every person is created in God’s image.
• The Common Good – encouraging children to contribute positively to their communities.
• Solidarity – fostering empathy, kindness and understanding.
• Participation – ensuring every child feels included and valued.
• Stewardship – helping children understand their responsibility to care for God’s creation.

Children are encouraged to explore their feelings, develop healthy relationships and understand how they can make a positive contribution to society. They learn that their gifts are God-given and that they have a responsibility to use them in the service of others.

Implementation

At St Anne’s, we deliver RSHE and PSHE through Ten Ten’s Life to the Full Plus programme, which has been approved by the Catholic Education Service and is fully aligned with the statutory requirements for Relationships Education and Health Education.

The programme is carefully sequenced and delivered in an age-appropriate manner, ensuring that children build their knowledge and understanding progressively throughout their time at school.

Life to the Full Plus is structured around three key modules:

Created and Loved by God

This module explores the individual and helps children understand that they are uniquely made and loved by God. It promotes self-worth, emotional wellbeing and personal development.

Created to Love Others

Building upon children’s understanding of God’s love, this module focuses on relationships, family life, friendships and keeping safe. Pupils learn how to develop healthy, respectful relationships and understand the importance of compassion and forgiveness.

Created to Live in Community

This module explores children’s role within the wider world. It encourages pupils to recognise their responsibilities as members of local, national and global communities and inspires them to work for the common good.

At St Anne’s:

• RSHE and PSHE are taught regularly across all year groups.
• Lessons are adapted to meet the needs of all learners.
• Teachers create safe and supportive environments where children feel confident to ask questions and share their views.
• Learning is enriched through prayer, reflection, discussion and links to Catholic Social Teaching.
• Children are taught strategies to support their mental health, wellbeing and personal safety.
• Opportunities are provided for children to explore current issues and understand their role as active citizens.

In the Early Years Foundation Stage, children develop their understanding of personal, social and emotional development through the EYFS Framework alongside age-appropriate elements of Life to the Full Plus.

Impact

Through our RSHE and PSHE curriculum, children leave St Anne’s with the knowledge, understanding and confidence needed to navigate the opportunities and challenges of modern life.

Our pupils:

• Understand that they are loved by God and valued as individuals.
• Develop healthy and respectful relationships with others.
• Demonstrate empathy, kindness and compassion.
• Understand the importance of physical and mental wellbeing.
• Make informed choices and recognise how to keep themselves safe.
• Show resilience and confidence when faced with challenges.
• Appreciate the diversity of the world around them and respect the views and experiences of others.
• Recognise their responsibility to contribute positively to their communities and care for God’s creation.

Ultimately, our pupils leave St Anne’s equipped to live life to the full—confident in who they are, secure in their faith and ready to make a positive difference in the world.
