Trip to Windsor

We had a great visit to Windsor Castle last Friday and were able to find our more about its interesting history and link this to our Tudor topic.

Luckily, we arrived on time to see the guards change before entering the castle to look at Queen Mary’s doll’s house, the state apartments and the beautiful St George’s Chapel.

In PE this week, we’ve been practicing for sports day. We started by working on our sprinting technique – using the F.A.S.T approach – then tried to improve our personal best on the long jump.

Thursday 14th June

Today, Year 5 and Year 6 competed at Quad Kids at Palmer Park Stadium. Representing Year 5 we had Jasiu, George, Alan, Leah, Kayla and Zashyah. Representing Year 6 we had Luke, Mark, Natalie and Nefera. All of the children took part in 75m sprint, standing long jump, shot put, 600m sprint and in the final race of the day, Zashyah, George, Natalie and Mark took part in the relay. They all exceeded themselves not only in ability, but in behaviour too.  This shone through by Zashyah bringing home bronze medal for St. Anne’s as a top three female competitor.  Miss K and Mrs Evans were so proud in supporting the children at the event.

Today in Science, we carried out a fair test to see which material would be the best insulator for a balloon filled with ice.

We used materials like, tin foil, plastic bags, cotton wool and netting and tested the appearance of the ice over time.

We will find out if any ice remains in the morning to see which group had the best insulator.

Within our topic of ‘Tomorrow’s World’ this term, we have been focusing on the three Rs; Reduce, Reuse & Recycle. As part of this, we have been using recyclable materials to make a new functional product in DT. Have a look at some of the examples below:

This week we put all of our cricket skills into practice in our inter-house tournament. The results will be announced tomorrow, in praise assembly! Well done to everyone who took part and played brilliantly as a team.

In Topic, we have been creating our own persuasive posters about the importance of recycling (after researching this online). We will then use these facts and the persuasive language in our cross curricular writing.

In Re, we have been looking in the Bible for references of the many titles and qualities of the Holy Spirit. We also discussed what the meaning of these qualities were and the meaning of the Holy Trinity. The children then designed their own image of the Holy Trinity (inspired by various other depictions of this). Have a look at some of our designs below:

This week in science, we have been exploring theories and supporting evidence related to the earth being spherical or flat. The children had to look at all of the evidence and decide which was stronger. they then had to argue their preferred theory with their partners.

In ICT, we have been creating our own recycling robots using the software Scratch. This involved creating an algorithm through coding and testing this for errors.

Year 5 & 6 Cross Country Competition

Well done to the Year 5s & 6s for taking part in the Cross Country competition at Emmer Green yesterday. It was great to see so many children taking part and showing great determination throughout the three laps. A big thank
you to the parents who came to cheer the children on.

Next week in Literacy, we will be writing our own adapted versions of war of the worlds, so today we focused on the new setting of our story by doing freeze frames of the scene and following this up by describing what we saw, heard, smelt etc. Some interesting facial expressions Year 5!

F1 Jaguar Primary Schools Challenge

A big well done to the Year 5 children who took part in the F1 Jaguar primary school challenge yesterday at the UTC in Reading (Advit, Alan, George, Voke, Royanna, Minal, Jasiu, Marina, Enrico & Jessica). The children have been working incredibly hard on their projects since February, with the support of Mrs Banks, Mrs Orife and Mrs Gupta, and had a busy day displaying and presenting their work, giving a five minute talk about their experiences, discussing the engineering of their cars and racing the cars they designed. All of this hard work paid off as our teams won third place overall! Congratulations to the team ‘Furious Falcons’, who were awarded best engineered car. Well done again to everyone who took part!

For our ‘Tomorrow’s World’ topic, we have been looking at our planet and how human activity can affect its future. We are focusing on the importance of recycling and the negative impact of littering / waste. We even did some litter picking around the school!

For our DT project, we will be creating a new product out of recyclable materials, so we kindly ask that you bring in any spare plastic bottles/cardboard boxes etc. that we could use for this.

Spring Term 2

Week beginning 19th March 2018

Earlier this week we had a visit from the Royal Berkshire Fire & Rescue Service who carried out a fire safety presentation with year 5. The children enjoyed meeting the crew and also had the opportunity to have a look around the fire truck at all of the impressive equipment they use. A big thank you to the crew who took the time to visit St Anne’s and deliver their important fire safety message.

Year 5 High Five Netball Tournament

A big well done to Kayla, Leith, Leah, Harlem, Royanna, Sheya, Voke & Minal from Year 5 for competing in the Year 5 High Five netball Tournament at Caverhsam Primary.

The children played five games against several local schools and put all of their fantastic netball skills into action which resulted in the team coming third place. It was great to see the children working so well together as a team and enjoying the afternoon.

Thank you to parents for supporting the children by coming along to watch and thank you to Mr Gaylor and Mr Meakin for helping to coach the children.

Speak Out. Stay Safe.

On Wednesday, the NSPCC came to St Anne’s to do a Stay Safe. Speak Out assembly and workshop. It was a very informative visit as we learnt all about what the NSPCC does and it helped to raise awareness of some of the worries children might have, how children can stay safe and what to do if they need help.

We’ve had a busy week this week!

On Monday, we had a F1 afternoon workshop with Mrs Banks, Mrs Gupta and Mrs Orife. We were able to work as a team to carry out exciting tasks, such as building our own lego F1 car, testing this and designing our own team logo.

On Tuesday morning, we did our Bike Ability course in the playground to practise our bike-handling skills and signalling before making our way onto local roads in the afternoon! We had two full days to improve our cycling skills and test these in a real cycling experience!

Woolly Hat Day!

Thank you to year 5 for showing support for the homeless today by wearing their hats and donating money to St Mungo’s charity.

      

This week in Maths, we’be been doing a lot of measuring! We started with measuring different carbohydrates in g and then converting these to kg and vice versa, then we moved on to capacity where we estimated and measured containers filled with different liquids.

Next week we will be looking at converting between m and km.

In RE, we have been discussing the parable of the Good Samaritan in detail and acting this out (using freeze frames) to focus on the characters’ thoughts and feelings. Following this, we then started writing our own modern day Good Samaritan stories in the style of a news report.

In Maths this week, we have been solving various word problems using the Read, Note, Calculate, Answer (RNCA) strategy to practise the four operations. Last lesson, we wrote our own creative word problems and then gave it to our partner to solve and see if we both came up with the same answer.

This term in literacy, we have been reading The Ice Palace by Robert Swindells.

The children have been working very hard this week to prepare ideas for their news report. We have been doing role-plays as different eyewitness characters from the story and as news reporters to practice using direct and reported speech to record the key events from the story.

In RE, we have been exploring the meaning some of Jesus’ parables and how we could live out these teachings.

What a fun week! We all enjoyed our Christmas lunches on Wednesday and wearing our Christmas jumpers (see photos below).

In Spanish, we made our own Christmas cards, using new vocabulary that we had learnt. Feliz Navidad!

In Science, we created our own Christmas decorations using either buzzers, lights or motors, based on our group design. We then tested the circuits after finishing our designs. Great team work!

VISIT TO CAVERSHAM LIBRARY  – TUESDAY 5TH DECEMBER
We had a great time visiting Caversham Library and learning all about how the books are organised. We also had an opportunity to explore the many books in the children’s area and took part in some fun activities. Thank you to all who volunteered to join us on our trip!

This week in Art, we looked at paintings by the famous artist Lowry and drew our own industrial revolution scenes, inspired by this artist’s work. Next week we will be painting these using the 5 oil paints that Lowry used! Have a look at some of the photos below:

Year 5 Homework Grid – The Industrial Revolution.

Please remember to bring homework books in every Friday to be marked. Spellings and learn-its should be practised everyday and Bug Club also used daily.

SPAG: In SPAG this week, we will be looking at:

  • Apostrophes for contraction and possession
  • Using a variety of subordinating conjunctions in complex sentences (since, provided, although, even though, in order that etc.)

In our topic lesson, we had lots of fun learning Victorian slang words to help with writing dialogue in our historical narrative. we even had mini conversations, using the slang words in context. Have a look at our photos below:

I’m so pleased to see how much effort you are putting into your Second World War homework projects – keep up the good work!

In Art, we have been analysing and evaluating propaganda posters from World War Two. Looking at word choice, colours and imagery, we then made our own posters aimed at mothers/ host families by using persuasive techniques.

  • Using and identifying different sentence types – simple, compound and complex sentences (with subordinating conjunctions).
  • Using a variety of openers (-ing,-ed,fronted adverbials and simile openers)

Evacuation Day

Today we had our evacuation day where the children took on the role of evacuees. They each brought a selection of items from home, were given identity cards and details of their new host families.

We also learned about rationing and made our own wartime recipe; an egg-less sponge cake! The children then evaluated this on taste, texture and appearance.

Throughout the day we discussed the emotions and thoughts that evacuees would have had during this uncertain time and listened to real-life interviews from child evacuees during the Second World War.

Year 5 have settled in excellently and have enjoyed learning about life during the Second World War.
